We are very pleased to be able to offer in-house Titer Testing at Pet Wellness Centre.
What is Titer Testing?
Here’s the technical part – Titer testing evaluates the antibody response to the core vaccination or infection by Canine Parvovirus, Infectious Canine Hepatitis (Canine Adenovirus) and Canine Distemper Virus in dogs and Feline Panleukopenia, Herpes and Calici Virus in cats.
In less technical speak – this means we can test your dog or cat’s immunity against the suite of serious core diseases to determine whether an annual vaccination is necessary for your pet.
We can do this right here at Pet Wellness Centre and discuss the results with you within a day.
Why vaccinate at all?
Thanks to vaccines we now see far less of the nasty diseases in pets and thankfully, deaths from Canine Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Distemper are now rare in our region and the same applies for Feline Panleukopenia, Herpes and Calici Virus. Regular vaccinations is the most significant contributing factor in this reduction in disease and deaths. As vets, we’ll always recommend vaccinating as we’ve seen what these awful diseases can do to pets.
We know the vaccinations are necessary, however, the frequency with which they should be given over a pet’s lifetime is less easily known. Regular vaccines are given to maintain your pet’s individual immunity against the serious core diseases, however, once optimal immunity is reached it is not necessary to continue to vaccinate regularly.
The problem is, every pet is unique and without knowing your dog’s immunity status, the only safe thing to do is to continue to revaccinate regularly to ensure your pet is protected.
Titer Testing allows us to check your pet’s immunity and make an informed decision on whether revaccination is necessary for your individual pet.
Titer Testing at Pet Wellness Centre costs $203.50 and this includes a consultation with the vet and the collection of blood from your pet for testing. Please don’t hesitate to call or get in touch with us to discuss this option for your furry mate.
*Please note that we are unable to provide FELINE titer testing in-house at this time.
